Fast-moving fire in Bushwick building led to the death of 7-year-old Joel Smith Sunday morning.

A 7-year-old Brooklyn boy died in a fast-moving blaze early Sunday after his dad was pushed back by flames and critically injured during two attempts to reach his sleeping son.
Relatives didn’t realize little Joel Smith was missing until they reached the front of the burning Bushwick building about 1:20 a.m.
“There were so many people outside we couldn’t tell who was who,” said family friend Shawn Payne, who was playing Uno with Joel’s mom, Mia Smith, when they smelled smoke in the first-floor flat.
“We all ran back in,” he said. “The heat and smoke was everywhere . . . We ran back out. It was too much heat,” Payne said.
The boy’s anguished father, Melvin Blow, 34, wouldn’t give up.
“Melvin dove past me and went back inside to find Joel,” Payne said.
“He was screaming, trying to find him.”
The boy died at the scene and his father was badly burned on his hands and face. He’s being treated at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell.
Payne returned to the charred Decatur Street building hours after the inferno.
“He was like any other kid,” Payne said of Joel, a student at Public School 45
“He liked to run around in the park and play. He played video games and football.”
The boy’s mother and her three other children were treated at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for smoke inhalation, sources said.
It took firefighters nearly 90 minutes to get the ferocious blaze under control, FDNY officials said. Wind, ice and frigid temperatures made it especially hard to fight.
“The flames were raging from the top of the building and the buildings on each side of it,” said neighbor Eddie Rodriguez, 55.
“I was watching TV when I smelled smoke,” said a third-floor tenant who identified himself only as Mohamed. “I walked out of my door and there was thick, black smoke covering the hallway.”
Other neighbors awoke to cries of distress.
“I heard screaming that woke me up,” said second-floor resident Rose Sistrunk, 36. “I grabbed my kids and ran out. There was black smoke in the hallway. It was everywhere.”
As she escaped, she saw the dead boy’s father standing on the sidewalk.
“He was burned up. His skin was peeling,” said Sistrunk, whose apartment was destroyed in the blaze. “I just feel bad for that little boy. It’s so sad.”
The cause of the fire, which damaged two adjacent buildings, is under investigation but is not considered suspicious, FDNY officials said.
Officials with the American Red Cross said they were helping four displaced families, including 10 adults and eight children, find emergency housing.
