The fire was in between two 3 story frame buildings that quickly spread to the cockloft of both . 5 lines were stretched and put into operation . @ 1433 hrs Division 11 transmitted a 10-66 for lost firefighters. Two members that were operating on the roof fell thru when there was a minor collapse. The members were located and removed from the building . They were treated and green tagged by E.M.S. A roll call was taking and all members were accounted for. Fire was placed under control at 15:30 hrs.
The blaze erupted just before 2 p.m. on Bedford Ave. between N. 7th and N. 8th Sts.
Witnesses said the fire began in the space between a Cross County Federal Savings Bank and a neighboring cafe, then shot up to the bank building’s cockloft — the space between the roofline and ceiling.
More than 150 firefighters responded, but were unable to quell the blaze before the bank building’s roof collapsed, trapping two firefighters under an avalanche of tin, wood, and Sheetrock.
The firefighters were ventilating the ceiling when the entire ceiling came down on them, Assistant Chief James Leonard explained.
“It was identical to what happened to Kevin Kane,” said Leonard, remembering the 31-year-old firefighter who lost his life in 1991 when the the ceiling inside an abandoned East New York building came crashing down. “(In this case) their fellow firefighters were able to pull them out.”
The two smoke-eaters were rushed to New York Cornell Hospital with non-life threatening injuries before the fire was tamed at 3:30 p.m.
Four other firefighters and two civilians also suffered minor injures. One of the firefighters broke his ribs during the fire, officials at the scene said.
The exact cause was still being investigated Tuesday afternoon
